We are excited to announce to the North High School community that the 2016-17 school year is off to an excellent start. Now more than 20 school days into the year, we are pleased to share with you some great news.-Student enrollment, currently at 1689, is at its highest point since 2011. We are pleased to welcome new Stars to our campus.
-Student attendance is higher than it’s ever been! For the first month of school, our rate was 96.36%, a full 1.5% higher than any other time in recent history.
-Student achievement is up. We saw a 14% increase in students meeting or exceeding state standards in English Language Arts on the most recent state (CAASPP/Smarter Balanced) exam, and were pleased to see our performance far exceed the average performance district-wide.
-Students are engaged in innovative learning with real-world application. To highlight just some of the many examples:
- The 40 students enrolled in our Aviation program are now flying full-motion simulators and learning from guest speakers, including renowned pilots and NASA representatives, as they work towards the completion of ground school.
- Many of our 300+ Agriculture students will see the culmination of a year’s worth of work as they show their animals at the Kern County Fair. We congratulate Ms. Natalie Ryan. She was recently named not only the best young Ag teacher statewide, but also in the western region of the United States. This is an amazing accomplishment and a very high honor!
- Graphic Arts students are seeing their designs on t-shirts and in print as they would when operating an actual business. Their teacher, Mr. Chavez, is recognized as expert in the industry.
- Project Lead the Way engineering and architecture students are meeting with, and learning from, the actual construction tradesmen (architects, construction foremen, designers and project specialists) who are in the process of modernizing our campus and building the new office and gymnasium.
- Robotics club members are putting the final touches on their robots as they prepare to compete in the weekly Kern Robotics League competitions
-Our Stars on Point curriculum, developed by NHS teachers, is designed to promote what it truly means to be a STAR: Success, Trust, Ambition, Respect and Spirit. Schoolwide lessons have been very successful. They have positively impacted school spirit, and we have seen a significant decrease in student office referrals, suspensions and expulsions.
-Construction continues daily as we work towards the January, 2017 opening of our new office and the August, 2017 opening of our new gymnasium.
Our schoolwide motto this year is “All In”. Please join with us as we work together to ensure that every student is fully “Prepared to Succeed” in life after high school. If you’d like to find ways to be involved, please contact me at (661) 399-3351 x 75066.

Welcome to the 2016-17 School Year!
North High School is thrilled to welcome students for the start of a new school year. This is sure to be a fantastic year! Our staff is “All In” to make sure our students are fully “Prepared to Succeed”. There is an excitement in the air as everyone is happy to be at the home of the Stars.
Some updates at the start of the school year include:
On Friday, August 12, 2016 we were excited to see over 350 9th grade students visit campus for the Link Crew Freshman Orientation. Under the leadership of Mr. Aaron Dutto, our dedicated team of Link Crew teachers and student leaders promoted school spirit and helped our new Stars feel welcome and comfortable. The Link Crew was also at each gate on the first day of school to welcome all Stars to the new school year. Great work, Link Crew!
Wednesday, August 17 was our first day of school. Throughout first week of school our counselors, registrar, office and outreach staff warmly greeted our new students and quickly enrolled them in their schedule of classes. By the end of the third day of classes our enrollment of 1634 far exceeded our predictions and expectations. We are excited to see enrollment on the rise!
Our teachers continue to work hard to make sure every student develops a plan for success. Our unique course offerings help prepare students for college and/or career. They include: Graphic Arts, AVID, Construction 1-3, Aviation, Video Game Design, Web Design, Project Lead the Way Engineering, Robotics club, Drafting and Architectural Design, Agriculture (Business, Vet Science, Plant Science) and outstanding performing arts programs. You will find programs at North that will help prepare you for life after high school!
Keep checking our webpage for construction updates. We are on schedule to be in our new office by January, 2017 and Gymnasium by August, 2017. We’re building for the future.
Welcome back, Stars!
Welcome to the 2016 Summer, Stars!
Prepared to Succeed. This is our goal. We want every student who walks the halls of North to leave prepared to succeed for life after high school, whether it is in college or in a career.
We are excited to see 800+ students enrolled in the six weeks of summer school. The campus is alive with energy as students continue their studies. Grades from the second semester of the 2015-16 school year are being posted soon. If you believe you are in need of a second semester summer school class, and are not already enrolled in summer school, please come to the NHS Cafeteria at 7:15 AM on Monday, June 27, 2016. We expect to have space in most courses.
As you can easily see by driving past North, construction is well-underway in many parts of our campus. There are many new improvements to our buildings and facilities. Some upgrades you can expect to see in the upcoming months include:
-Completion of the new administration building, entrance at the front of campus, and fencing. Framing has been completed, and we expect to be in the new offices by January, 2017.
-Completion of a new gymnasium on the north end of campus. This will be the largest, nicest gymnasium in the Kern High School District. We expect to be playing basketball in the new gym by November, 2017.
-New parking lots will be installed, along with solar panels for energy conservation. The Red and Grey are going green! Portions of this work may continue through December, 2016.
-A new bus loading zone is being built off of Stockton Avenue. Using Galaxy Avenue to drive past the front of the school is no longer an option. Parking lots will now be accessed from China Grade Loop.
We are also thrilled to announce some enhancements to course offerings.
-Aviation is coming to North High School. We have hired an aviation instructor, Mrs. Lewis, and are purchasing flight simulators. This first year will focus on an introduction to aviation, the completion of “ground school” and preparation to pass the written exam for pilots.
-Our Agriculture program is expanding. Ms. Sears has been hired as our third Ag teacher, making our program one of the largest and best in the district. North’s Ag department was recently recognized as a Gold Standard program, meaning it is in the top 10% of all programs, statewide.
-Project Lead the Way continues to develop students for future careers as engineers. Our first four-year class just graduated, and nearly 20 Stars announced their intentions to pursue collegiate studies to become engineers. We are now working closely with a company out of Alaska to explore the use of drones with Project Lead the Way, as we want to be on the cutting edge of technology and make sure our students are fully prepared to succeed in life after high school.
-Our Graphic Arts program is expanding. We are fortunate to have an industry expert in graphic arts, printing and t-shirt making joining our staff. He comes to us with more than 30 years of experience, including directing art departments at some of the largest companies in the nation.
-Our Stars on Point initiative is in full development. When students return to campus they can expect to see signs, banners, and posters throughout campus highlighting the traits we want to see in every Star student: Success, Trust, Ambition, Respect and Spirt (S.T.A.R.S.).
We are looking forward to the 2016-17 school year and are working hard to make sure North High School is the best school in town! School resumes Wednesday, August 17, 2016. Enjoy your summer, and please know how eager we are to see you in August!
