Program Description:

This course helps students develop competency in speaking, listening, reading, and writing, with a primary emphasis on oral communication and comprehension. Exposure to other cultures through various activities helps focus the student on cultural similarities as well as differences. A variety of communicative, multimedia, audio, and video techniques provides students with opportunities to learn the language in many exciting and interesting real-life contexts.


WHAT STUDENTS WILL LEARN:

You will practice and learn Spanish in diverse formats and activities--pair work, small group work, class discussions, readings, listening activities, cultural videos, songs, and art. You will be exposed to multiple perspectives of the Spanish-speaking world by learning their culture & language. You might be able to connect with the topics, readings, discussions, and converse with others, and share your thoughts through speaking and writing.   

PROFESSIONAL CERTIFICATION OPPORTUNITIES:


  • Spanish is an "A-G" course, which a minimum of 2 years is required for any student wanting to attend a 4-year college directly out of high school.
  • Biliteracy Seal after 4 years.
  • Spanish Honor Society after 4 years.
  • Dual enrollment with BC for Spanish Speaking one semester.

  • Spanish 3 Honors, Spanish 4 AP, and Spanish 5 AP classes will provide a GPA Boost.

HIGH SCHOOL CREDITS AVAILABLE:


Spanish 1 - 5 elective credits

Spanish 2 - 5 elective credits

Spanish 3 Honors- 5 elective credits + GPA boost because it is an Honors course

Spanish 4 AP (language) - 5 elective credits + GPA boost because it is an AP course

Spanish 5 AP (Literature) - 5 elective credits + GPA boost because it is an AP course

Spanish Speaking 1- 5 elective credits + 3 units of DE credit at Bakersfield College

 

PREREQUISITE REQUIREMENT(S):


Begin with Spanish 1 or talk to any teacher from the department to see if a change level is required. If a student is a native speaker and is cleared to start with Spanish 2, Spanish Speaking 1, or Spanish 3 Honor, they have an opportunity to move up to Spanish 4 AP and Spanish 5 AP much quicker.  Being bilingual in Spanish opens doors in any future career.


MEET THE INSTRUCTORS:

LierraMiss Liera - I have been teaching Spanish at North High School for the past 21 years. I enjoy connecting with students and use a variety of strategies to teach Spanish. I love to travel and eat. I went to Bakersfield College, California State University Bakersfield, and University of California, Santa Barbara. 


sifuentesMs. Ara: I have been teaching Spanish for 8 yrs at North High, and worked at Centennial High School for 10 yrs.

I teach Spanish levels 1, 2 & 4 AP Language. I graduated from CSUB. I love my job even though these last couple years have been rough for all of us by learning and teaching online. I wish for students to come back to our classrooms for more efficient and productive learning.

 

guzmanMy name is Señorita Guzman (Miss. Guzman). This will be my 3rd year teaching at North High. I graduated from CSUB with a Bachelors in Spanish.  I have a passion for teaching Spanish and helping my students learn the language. Some of my hobbies include cooking, baking, yoga, watching movies, and listening to music.  

 

azparrenSeñor Azparren--I have been at North High for 18 years and am also the voice of the Stars as the announcer for NHS football. I graduated from CSUB as well as BC. I spent some time growing up in Spain and I love helping students understand the Spanish culture. I have taken 2 groups of NHS students on tours of Spain in the summers of 2006 and 2010.
